Bias against women explored by Bombshell. Does it do #MeToo justice?

December 21, 2019 By Karl 3 Comments

Bias,Bombshell, #MeToo with stars Theron & Kidman & their realife counterparts

Over two years ago, the flood gates of the #MeToo movement starkly revealed the predation, bias and discrimination women still face in workplaces. The  first accusations against Harvey Weinstein transformed a small hashtag enterprise started by a lone black woman into #meToo today...and helped bring about Bombshell. In the movie Nicole Kidman plays  former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, and Charlize Theron portrays  superstar anchor and personality, Megyn Kelly. Margot Robbie is a … [Read more...]

Plea bargains, Prisons, Parole — an after-your-arrest Tutorial with Boston Strangler tie in.

November 23, 2019 By Karl 1 Comment

Plea bargains would not have served Strangler victims' interests.

Am close to finishing my latest book, Privileged Killers, where I take plea bargains and parole board decisions to task. These are two phenomena that've dictated court and corrections culture  for years. Hopefully this tutorial will help  writers, criminology students,  true-crime fans, and others understand these topics. Plea bargains are a win-win often. Suspects get to plead guilty to doing something less serious than what they've done in all likelihood. The joke is it's  like copping to  … [Read more...]

College admission scandal. Now, waiting for the Loughlin shoe to drop.

September 13, 2019 By Karl 5 Comments

A quick update in the long broiling college admission scandal. The Huffman shoe has dropped in the scandal. See my Varsity Blues blog about this when the case broke. The Sentence. A  judge just sentenced actress Felicity Huffman to 14 days behind bars in a federal prison, a $30,000 fine, one year of supervised release, and 250 hours of community service. For more about what went down today in Boston, go here. Celebs (Huffman in ctr) in college admission scandal. My take on the … [Read more...]

Celebrity privilege. See who are among DUI royalty?

Lindsay Lohan - celebrity privilege?

Celebrity privilege is a type of  "Special treatment!" We know the latter phrase if we grew up with a sib  or if nursery school or kindergarten teachers used it. Parents in the U.S. and early teachers drilled it into our heads—no special treatment, wait your turn, share toys with others. So, it's not surprising that Americans talk about privilege, discrimination, preferential treatment a lot. Preferential crim justice treatment for celebrity privilege? Celebs have long been ordered to … [Read more...]

Rape, Coverups, Bullying—Araoz, Acosta, Epstein

July 13, 2019 By Karl Leave a Comment

Rape allegation.

Another amazing week. US Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta resigned amid the Jeffrey Epstein sex scandal. Pressure mounted against Acosta as news trickled out that he'd allowed an incredibly lenient plea deal to go forward under his watch in Epstein's Florida trial years ago. And then an accusation of rape! Rape. The allegation of rape by a then, 14-15 year old girl, trumped Acosta's fall from grace. In a TODAY interview with Savannah Guthrie, included here, Jennifer Araoz shared … [Read more...]

Smollett case: enough twists that this timeline necessary.

smollett

Smollett celeb justice case has enough twists  that we need a timeline. Here's the latest. The Senior DA in Chicago dropped all charges allegedly at the behest of   Michelle Obama via her former chief of staff. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former Obama  insider, and the Chief of the  Chicago Police Department (CPD) were outraged and rightly so. No justice here and a total waste of $130,000 in CPD resources investigating what might've been a hoax. But just today, Inspector General Patrick Blanchard … [Read more...]

Privilege, Power, and Race — Whiteness explained.

Power Privilege and Race

Allan Johnson, Privilege, Power, and Race. Privilege, Power, and Race. One of my favorite sociologists,  Allan Johnson,  died recently.  I've been meaning to pay homage to him and one of his key books. His thoughts on privilege, power and race reflect notions I've expressed here and elsewhere. The following is an excerpt from Johnson's book Privilege, Power, and Difference, 2nd edition, which deserves being quoted in it's entirety. "Individuals and systems are connected to each … [Read more...]

Thoughts about “Clarice,” spinoff from “The Silence of the Lambs.”

I managed to catch the  2nd episode of the "Clarice" series recently. It channeled the Waco cult situation, also known as  the Waco, Texas massacre.  That was the controversial law enforcement siege of a compound that belonged to the Branch Davidian religious cult. In the 2nd  episode,  Clarice … [Read More...]

Popular Culture and True Crime – Tutorial III – Why women are such true crime fans.

As part of our series on Popular Culture and True Crime, our final tutorial looks at why women seem such devoted true crime fans. Tutorials I and II dealt with the fascination with serial killer trading cards and murderabilia (the collection of mementos), respectively. While I've … [Read More...]

Popular Culture and True Crime – Tutorial II – Murderabilia.

Popular Culture and True Crime – Tutorial I – Serial Killer trading cards?

About the same time that Michael Aamodt, a professor at Radford University in Virginia, started cataloguing serial killers, trading cards popped up. ‘40 Years a Prisoner’- Film about MOVE vs Philly Cops.
