How to be a CLEFT HEART book booster and reap rewards.

Book cover of Cleft Heart: Chasing Normal

Thought some of you Cleft Heart book fans might get a kick out of seeing a photo (top right of the collage below) of politicians Pelosi and Schumer under an umbrella in D.C, back in the day. Actually, it's my sister Barbara and me in front of the U.S. Capitol after my dad mustered out of the military as a journalist in Washington, D.C. for the Navy's All Hands magazine. My loving sis  wrote last year about growing up with a brother with clefts here and here. She wanted to add to the book I'd … [Read more...]

Post-Charlottesville: Violent/Nonviolent cops in the face of bullying?

August 27, 2017 By Karl Leave a Comment

Blue and white book cover of "Policing Society" wh deals with bullying .

No bullying allowed?  With the tragic killing in Charlottesville, VA and the subsequent debates about police behavior pre and post Charlottesville bullying, it seems time to mention Policing Society. I wrote the book during a sabbatical in England where I compared the Greater Manchester Police Department with the Oakland Police Department.   I chose Manchester and Oakland for my tale of two cities because  they were remarkably similar cities with historically different policing philosophies. … [Read more...]

Lady w scales peeks from under her blindfold, leading to not-blind justice

After more than a year of planning and reconstruction by my webmaster, my site is better and more interesting (e.g., featuring topics like not-blind justice). Site has new, easier navigation. The site is faster and easier to navigate now. The latter means you can more easily find blogs, info, and resources (including new links, books, promotions, fun quizzes) that interest you.  Just look for several pull-down choices under 9 new menu selections in red at the top of the site. And use , too, … [Read more...]

Will OJ get parole tomorrow? Where and how to watch his hearing.

July 17, 2017 By Karl 1 Comment

Fuhrman covers OJ parole hearing.

I mentioned in a prior blog that the ALCATRAZ EAST crime museum just opened an exhibit around a new acquisition. The item is the White Ford Bronco that carried a frantic and suicidal O.J. Simpson during one of the most famous televised car chases ever. For this reason alone, millions will be tuned in tomorrow to O.J.'s parole hearing. But, as you know, there are many other reasons to tune in.   I'm going to watch because, tho I'm a dispassionate criminologist regarding most topics, I have a … [Read more...]

Male privilege and women in elevators.

Male and female showing male privilege in elevators.

So here's my first bit of advice to those of my male gender. Slow down or cross the street if you're following a woman walking ahead of  you in the middle of the night on a lonely street.   Male privilege and women in elevators. My current book deals with male privilege among other things. Last week I thought back to one of my earliest realizations of this phenomenon. Male privilege realization. I was old enough to be walking around my sleepy town at night —maybe age 15 or so. I … [Read more...]

A Test to see if you have a Psychopath in your Life.

Do you know a psychopath? I certainly do. My latest book, Privileged Killers,  is about a few who crossed paths with me in my everyday life.
