A quick update in the long-simmering college admission scandal.
The Lori Loughlin shoe has now dropped in the scandal, long after the Huffman one did. See my blog here for my predictions about this case would turn out for privileged celebs.

In a stunning development Hollywood star Lori Loughlin and her husband signed plea deals and admitted guilt yesterday.
Her attractive face frowning at times, and nodding sadly at others, she answered a judge’s questions via Zoom video.
Eventually, when she finally uttered the word “guilty” — she closed her eyes and sighed.
If a federal judge accepts her plea bargain deal, she’s going to prison for two months.
Her hubby, a successful fashion designer, pleaded guilty also. He’ll go to prison for for five months.

My take on the sentence is the same as my reaction to the 14 day prison term and sentence for fellow actress Felicity Huffman caught up in the same scandal. I think that it’s extremely light, as one might expect in a celebrity case.

Lori Loughlin and her husband were among the most high-profile parents caught up in the case, and had been scheduled to go to trial in October 2020..
They are the 23rd and 24th parents to plead guilty or agree to do so.
All but one parent who’s been sentenced so far has received prison time, ranging from two weeks to nine months. Eight parents who have already pleaded guilty received longer sentences than Loughlin or her husband.
Remaining parents who pleaded not guilty are scheduled to go to trial in two groupings, in October and January of 2021.

Details of Loughlin’s daughters’ college applications have been released in court filings, including images of the girls on rowing machines and falsified athletic resumes claiming they’d won accolades as crew coxswains. Neither girl rowed competitively.

Loughlin, along with her daughters, Olivia Jade and Isabella, became a symbol of America’s outrage with the privilege that defined the scandal.

Federal prosecutors in 2019 detailed a more than $25 million scam to help wealthy families bribe their way into elite colleges. The scheme allegedly involved bogus exam scores and falsified athletic achievements. U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling. “We will continue to pursue accountability for undermining the integrity of college admissions.”
Some reactions to college bribery cases-
- $500K to go to USC? Couldn’t the ‘academic-challenged’ daughters been just as happy at Arizona State or Pepperdine…[free to] have run [their] makeup blog and made millions, free to travel for … yacht appearances?
- Lawyer fees to go to prison (lawyer obviously decided it was more lucrative to ‘fight’ Uncle Sam for a year), plus fines, plus bribes to get kids into USC, plus tuition. Expensive … Next time, do it the legal way and build a wing on a library or something, acceptable corruption.
- According to Daniel Golden in The Price of Admission, New Jersey real estate developer Charles Kushner pledged $2.5 million (tax deductible) to Harvard University in 1998, not long before his son Jared was admitted to the prestigious Ivy League school.

- Manny Medrano, former federal prosecutor in L.A. “Full props to their lawyer — a two- to five-month exposure is pretty darn good at this late stage in the game…and for the audacity of what they did.
