NFL’s Martin will always be linked with Incognito’s bullying.

August 2, 2015 By Karl Leave a Comment

An injury ends my string of blogs about the Martin-Incognito affair.

Carolina Panther offensive lineman Jonathan Martin,  who became a household name when he left the Miami Dolphins because teammate Richie Incognito bullied him, is retiring. Martin announced Monday that it’s not bullying this time that’s taking him off the field, it’s a recent back injury which would have required season-ending surgery.

Fair or not, Martin’s short NFL career won’t be remembered for the 32 starts he made from 2012-14 but for being bullied by former Miami teammate Incognito.

Incognito was suspended for the second half of the 2013 season and was out of the league in 2014. The Bills gave Incognito another chance at redemption this February and he has since vowed to be a better person.

In March, shortly after signing with the Panthers, Martin said he had moved on from the bullying scandal.

Martin comes from an illustrious family, had stellar ugrd career.

“Martin has a total of nine relatives who graduated from Harvard including his grandfather, a professor in international development, and his maternal great grandfather, one of a dozen African-American students there in the 1920s.[4]

Martin attended John Thomas Dye School in the Los Angeles area and for high school, he attended nationally ranked Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, California. . . . Martin originally committed to play for the UCLA Bruins. However, after getting cleared academically by Stanford University, he de-committed from UCLA and committed to the Cardinal …

At Stanford University, Martin studied classics (ancient history). As a redshirt freshman in 2009, Martin started 11 of 13 games at left tackle. He was one of two freshman starters on the offensive line, along with left guard David DeCastro. Despite its inexperience, the Cardinal offensive line allowed a Pac-10-low seven sacks on the year, enabling Stanford’s freshman quarterback Andrew Luck to lead the conference in passing efficiency at 143.47. …

In his sophomore year, Martin started all games at left tackle and was named a first team All-American by…Quarterback Andrew Luck led the Pac-10 in passing efficiency for the second year in a row

As a junior, Martin again started all games and earned All-America honors by Scout.com and the Walter Camp Foundation.” Wiki

Pro Career and bullying.

The 25-year-old Martin was a second-round draft pick of the Dolphins in 2012 and started all 16 games for them as a rookie and seven more games in 2013 before the bullying incident, which caused a much-publicized investigation into the Dolphins’ locker room culture.

It was determined through an NFL investigation that three Miami linemen — Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey — engaged in a pattern of harassment directed at Martin and another young offensive lineman identified as Player A in the Ted Wells report.

Last year Martin started nine games for the 49ers, and this year he was claimed off waivers by Carolina Panthers after the 49ers cut him.

Martin played well during offseason workouts, but injured his back while working out after the team completed a June minicamp. Told he would need surgery and potentially miss the season, Martin opted to retire. The Panthers would not address whether the team had any indication Martin’s back was an issue.

Experts feel that Martin has struggled on the field over recent years. Whatever the real reason for his surprise retirement announcement, Jonathan Martin’s NFL career is over. I imagine this will be my last Martin-Incognito blog.

My latest book, PRIVILEGED KILLERS, is a true story about a half-dozen Dark Triad people in my everyday life - narcissists, manipulators, and psychopaths. Three of 'em murdered people, and one came after my wife and me. Print and e-book versions of this (and CLEFT HEART) available at Amazon and elsewhere online. Also at your local bookstore.
