Channeling Malcolm X and Jonathan Trumbull on Book tour

An update on Cleft Heart,  the first-ever memoir written about the cleft experience by a cleft.

East  Coast –North– book tour. 

I’m excited that my first East Coast tour for Cleft Heart is about to start. A serious family illness delayed it after my successful West Coast tour last fall. If you live in the northern part of the East Coast, especially in New York or Connecticut, here’s a chance to ask me anything about the book face to face.

I’ll be at the Audubon Med Center Bookstore in Manhattan first. Malcolm X and the rebuilt Audubon Ballroom where he was shot are part of a major plot twist in Cleft Heart. The book event will be in a very safe part of Manhattan, across the street from my alma mater, Columbia Medical School and the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, where talented teams operate on kids with clefts.

In the photo,  the bookstore is in the foreground—part way down the block behind the original  copper green facade—and the Columbia University Lasker Biomedical Research Building is in the background at 3960 Broadway. After a big preservation fight, Davis Brody Bond saved portions of the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was killed, and restored the 1912 façade.

A couple of days later, I’ll be at a book event just a block from the Gothic residence hall where I lived at Yale—featured in several Cleft Heart chapters. The hall is named after Jonathan Trumbull, Sr. who was a and advisor to George Washington. He was a confidant to Washington in part because he was the only colonial governor at the start of the Revolution to take up the rebel cause, according to Wikipedia.Trumbull  was one of the few Americans who served as governor in both a pre-Revolutionary colony and a post-Revolutionary state.
