Murdered while in prayer, while in school: The bullying connection.

Schools and houses of worship are two of the most revered places in our society. They are also among the most vulnerable since—unlike many places of business, transportation centers and the like—they've generally lacked guards and security. That's changing for schools, and sadly now, for places of worship. Yes, there've been other shootings and bombings at sacred places (to show the range, Charleston, SC in 2015; Birmingham, AL in 1963). But there've rarely been calls for armed protection for … [Read more...]

Throw the book at certain rapists in this #meToo era.

Amber Rose Carlson wrote a piece about her rapist and his sentence for the New York Times recently. Besides dealing with rapists and sentencing, she covers many other timely topics in this #meToo era. Life without parole for rapists. These topics include  injustice, male privilege, life without parole, and several others. I've blogged and written about many of them  (for instance, in my forthcoming book,  Four Murders and a Funeral). I include Ms. Carlson's piece here in its entirety. … [Read more...]

Scary NFLer—victim of bullying, discrimination, or mental illness?

I'm disturbed and saddened that discrimination and/or mental illness has taken a serious toll on a bullying victim I've featured in prior posts.    Ex-NFLer Jonathan Martin graduated from Harvard-Westlake prep school in L.A. and then Stanford. He joined the Miami Dolphins in 2012. But during his 2nd year with Miami, he became the center of a scandal involving harassment and bullying on the part of his teammates Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey.   Hero, villain, or fool?  Things … [Read more...]

Rape, male privilege, sentencing, and punishment.

An essay about rape and male privilege that's been widely circulated lately got my attention for sure. Not because so many women have been Weinsteined by Harvey who had gatekeeping power or raped by everyday men who were intimidating. But because I've been addressing similar issues in a book I'm writing. Several  of the real-life murderers in my memoir got away easy just as Amber Rose Carlson's rapist did. Amber Rose Carlson is a doctoral candidate in philosophy at Vanderbilt University who … [Read more...]

It's Halloween season, and so why not have some scary villain fun? It's appropriate here, too. Thrillist.com has put together a list of the 33 scariest horror villains of all time. Scott Weinberg at Thrillist has left politicians and Hollywood producers off the list. Wonder … [Read more...]

“Angel of Death” serial killer. Going to heaven?

Not exactly an Easter story, but a prison inmate* just killed serial killer Donald Harvey. The inmate's motive, probably, was revenge. King Herod and governmental and religious authorities also wanted revenge for Jesus stirring up trouble.** Unlike Jesus, tho, "Angel of Death" Harvey won't be going to Heaven.Harvey, a 64-year-old, was  serving multiple life sentences after admitting in 1987 to killing three dozen hospital patients in Ohio and Kentucky. Harvey claimed he killed even more than … [Read more...]

Cyberbulling victory? FB cracks down on Revenge Porn.

Cyberbullying revenge porn constitutes a different kind of revenge than that discussed here last week. Villains who use so-called 'revenge porn' aren't as  heinous as revenge serial killers. But they do cause great harm, esp to women.Cyberbullying revenge porn."Cyberbulling revenge porn" refers to the sharing of sexually explicit images on the internet, without the consent of the people depicted in the pictures, in order to extort or humiliate them. It is often practiced by former partners of … [Read more...]
